On December 11, 2024, Sudanese journalist Yahya Hamad Fadlallah was arrested and taken from his home under accusations of supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a Sudanese paramilitary group formerly operating under the Sudanese government. The RSF has been responsible for numerous atrocities against civilians during the conflict in Darfur.
Detention, Torture, and Death
According to Sudanese media, Fadlallah was tortured during his detention and denied medical treatment despite suffering from diabetes. After his release on January 10, he was transferred to Al Nou Hospital in Omdurman, where his health had already severely deteriorated. He passed away three days later.
A Legacy in Journalism
Fadlallah was widely recognized as a leading figure in Sudanese journalism, known for excellence in media and literature. His career blended academic expertise with professional achievements, significantly contributing to the education of society and the training of future journalists.
A Call for Journalist Protection
The Free Press Alliance expresses deep sorrow over his passing and calls on the Sudanese government to ensure the safety of journalists, especially during times of war. The arrest and killing of media professionals during the conflict have reached alarming levels, posing a severe threat to press freedom. We urge Sudanese authorities to take immediate measures to protect journalists’ physical integrity and allow them to work without fear of retaliation.
