Italian Sports Journalist Luca Esposito Killed in Suspected Homicide

Italian authorities have launched a homicide investigation following the killing of Luca Esposito, a respected sports journalist whose body was discovered in southern Italy under circumstances that have shocked the country’s media community.

On July 19, firefighters responding to a blaze on farmland near Eboli, in the province of Salerno, found the charred body of the 53-year-old journalist. Investigators also recovered shell casings at the scene and believe Esposito was fatally shot before his body was set on fire in what appears to have been a deliberate attempt to conceal the crime.

The Salerno Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened a homicide investigation and is examining both Esposito’s personal life and professional activities. While Italian media report that investigators are not currently treating his journalistic work as the primary motive, authorities have not ruled out a connection between the killing and his reporting.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has urged authorities to conduct a swift, transparent, and comprehensive investigation to establish the motive behind the attack and determine whether Esposito was targeted because of his work as a journalist.

Known legally as Luigi Esposito, the veteran reporter was a prominent figure in Italian sports journalism. He served as editor-in-chief of the local football news outlet TuttoSalernitana.com, contributed to the newspaper La Città di Salerno, regularly appeared as a football commentator on regional broadcaster Otto Channel, and wrote analysis for TuttoC.com, a publication covering Italy’s Serie C football league.

Although Esposito primarily covered sports, his death highlights the importance of ensuring that every attack against a journalist is thoroughly investigated, regardless of the subject they report on. Determining whether his work played any role in the crime is essential to safeguarding press freedom and combating impunity.

At Free Press Alliance, we strongly condemn the killing of Luca Esposito and extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. Every attack against a journalist demands a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation. We call on Italian authorities to establish all the facts surrounding this case, determine whether Esposito’s journalistic work contributed to the attack, and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. Violence against journalists, regardless of the beat they cover, undermines press freedom and the public’s right to information.
