The persecution against journalist José Rubén Zamora continues. First arrested in July 2022 after exposing irregularities in the government of former Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei (2020-2024), Zamora has faced charges including money laundering and other criminal accusations. His case has been widely regarded by national and international organizations as a blatant attack on press freedom.

After spending more than 800 days in prison, enduring mistreatment, threats, and significant deterioration of his health, he was granted house arrest in October 2024. This measure provided a brief respite for the founder of elPeriódico and his family, who feared for his physical and emotional well-being.

However, hope has been short-lived. Criminal judge Erick García has ordered his return to the Mariscal Zavala prison, sparking renewed concern for his safety and the right to a fair trial. In response to this decision, Zamora stated: “I will not accept charges for crimes I did not commit, and I will continue fighting from prison.”

Zamora, who has been honored with prestigious awards such as the Gabo Foundation Prize and recognition from the King of Spain, has dedicated over three decades to exposing corruption in Guatemala. His imprisonment has been condemned by organizations advocating for press freedom and human rights, who see it as an attempt to silence critical journalism in the country.

Free Press Alliance strongly condemns this judicial decision and reaffirms its commitment to the fight for press freedom. We express our solidarity with José Rubén Zamora and his family and demand that his right to a fair and transparent trial be upheld.
