Mexican journalist Luis Ángel López was shot and killed in the early hours of June 11 in the city of Poza Rica, Veracruz, underscoring the persistent threats faced by reporters covering crime and public security in Mexico. His death marks another tragic attack against the press in one of the country’s most dangerous regions for journalists.
According to local reports, López was attacked by unidentified gunmen while traveling through Poza Rica. The killing occurred on the same road where journalist Carlos Castro was murdered earlier this year, raising renewed concerns about violence against media professionals and the continued failure to bring perpetrators to justice.
López worked for the regional newspaper Vanguardia, where he reported extensively on crime, violence, and security issues affecting Poza Rica and neighboring communities. His reporting focused on subjects that have long placed journalists at heightened risk in Mexico, particularly in areas where organized crime and corruption remain deeply entrenched.
Following the murder, authorities from Veracruz’s State Commission for Attention to and Protection of Journalists (CEAPP) confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are underway. Local media reports indicated that López had previously received threats and had obtained some level of support from state authorities. However, officials later clarified that he was not enrolled in any formal protection program at the time of his death.
Investigators are reportedly examining multiple lines of inquiry, including previous disputes between the journalist and local police officers. Nevertheless, the motive behind the attack has not yet been officially established.
The killing adds to a growing list of attacks against journalists in Mexico, a country that continues to rank among the most dangerous in the world for members of the press. Veracruz has developed a troubling reputation as one of the deadliest states for journalists, where violence, intimidation, and impunity have repeatedly undermined press freedom.
At Free Press Alliance, we strongly condemn the murder of Luis Ángel López and call for a swift, transparent, and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. The killing of journalists for carrying out their professional duties is an attack not only on the media but also on the public’s right to access information. Authorities must ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted, and take meaningful steps to improve protections for journalists working in high-risk environments.
